A Letter to Independence Parents

A message for our Independence community

February 16, 2016

Dear Parents/Guardians:

I want to thank each of you for your support and kind words over the past few days. On Friday, our hearts broke when we learned two young lives were lost on our campus. They were members of our sophomore class and we are mourning their passing. Our most sincere condolences go out to the families as they cope with the loss of their children.

Today, we continued offering grief counseling in the Media Center. We have been blessed to have social workers from our district assist us during this time of need, along with professionals from neighboring school districts and outside agencies. This tragedy has been felt beyond Independence and the Glendale Union High School District. We are grateful for the support of the community at large.

At the close of school today, two uninvited protestors gathered on public property to conduct a lawful protest in front of the school. Independence administrators, staff, and Glendale Police were at exits to ensure the safe release of students. We want you to know the opinions the protestors expressed were hurtful and offensive to many students who were grieving the loss of their classmates.

The compassion and care we have witnessed from our students, families, staff and the entire Glendale Union High School District community and beyond have not gone unnoticed. We are so very grateful for the outpouring of love and support we have received during this tragedy. We cannot express enough how thankful we are to have that support.

“Thank you” is not strong enough. We are forever grateful.
