Academic Decathlon Qualifies for State

Congratulations to the IHS Academic Decathlon team

Nine Independence students have been preparing since last August for the regional Academic Decathlon competition, held at Thunderbird High School, on February 6 and 7. Students competed in ten events, all tied to a theme. This year’s theme, New Alternatives in Energy: Ingenuity and Innovation, was challenging. Even so, Independence team members performed well and have now qualified for state competition in Mesa, March 13-14.

The event requires three team members in each of the three GPA ranges: Honors, Scholastic, Varsity. Valerie Maravilla, Savannah Hernandez and Rafael Garcia-Gomez are Honors. Scholastic members include Jeri Ann Soper and Stephanie Sanchez. Varsity team members include J.T. Cigan and Anne Marie Maddox-Guillen.  The students must prepare speeches, interview with judges, answer questions in front of a large audience, write speeches and take multiple choice tests in areas such as social science, art and economics. Gold, silver and bronze medals are up for grabs for the three GPA ranges and all areas. Junior Stephanie Sanchez earned a silver medal in the speech event. The team scored highest of all schools in Glendale Union High School District and ninth out of 27 teams.

In some school districts, students have the benefit of having Academic Decathlon as a class. Independence students must do all of their preparation on their own time. This makes the achievement even more impressive. Coaches Jodie Donner and Mark Graham are proud of the team’s accomplishments and look forward to assisting the students as they advance to the next level.
