MONDAY ANNOUNCEMENTS 

Shane’ Rib Shack (Marshall; 1/10)

Everybody loves Barbeque and Shane’s Rib Shack will be here every Monday to bring you’re their tasty barbeque. You will have the option to purchase a shredded barbeque sandwich or buffalo chicken strips for $5.00.

Visual Art Department (Cramer 1/13)

The Visual Arts Department is proud to announce that photography student Soraya Cortés Coria and 3D Design student Michelle Velazquez-Granados have been nominated to represent Independence at the Shemer Art Center for the New Horizons Student Exhibition. This art show features high quality work by high school students from around the valley. Only two students per school can be a part of the exhibition. Soraya Cortés Coria’s photography “Woeful” was selected and Michelle Velazquez-Granados’s ceramic vase “Familia de Rosas” was chosen. Good luck to the both of you at the awards ceremony this coming weekend.

Spring Musical (Farson; 1/14)

Are you interested in learning more about the Spring musical and how to audition? Then you need to attend a mandatory meeting on Thursday, 1/16 at 2:45pm in Ms. Farsons room, 501. You will learn about what is required to audition and what to expect on your audition day. Don’t miss this! If you have any questions, please see Ms. Farson.

Boys Volleyball (Andazola; 1/14)

Attention boys interested in playing boys volleyball we will have open gym on Thursday at 3:30 in the practice gym. Please make sure you have turned in a out of season form to participate. Thank you!

Wrestling (Cumpton; 1/14)

The wrestling season is well underway, and our final home meet is actually tomorrow, Wednesday the 14th.  Come out and support our Seniors in their last home wrestling meet here at Independence. Seniors include Alicia Alaniz and Ingrid Garcia representing the ladies, Carlos Galindo and Victor Vera Bruno as 2nd year wrestlers, and Roman Ortega and Jasiel Tapia as 4th year wrestlers. Wish them luck!

If you cannot attend the meeting please talk with Coach Anthony, Mr. Urban, or Mr. Lira to get information regarding the upcoming season and what is needed to be able to participate this offseason. Again, there is an informational meeting for all boys interested in playing baseball this spring on Tuesday January 21st after school on the varsity baseball field.

Achievement Above All (1/16)

Last night, the GUHSD Governing Board honored our Achievement Above All winners. Achievement Above All honors those individuals at Independence who have gone above and beyond to help our school; and who best exemplify what it means to be an Independence Patriot. This is the highest honor that Independence gives to individuals.

This year the recipients for Achievement Above All were:

Achievement Above All volunteer of the year Rosa Manzolo. Rosa is an Independence graduate who volunteers with the Patriot Pride Marching Band.

Achievement Above All staff of the year Leslie Navarrette. Ms. Navarrette is our school receptionist. She also coaches Unified Special Olympics and softball; and has helped out with Anytown and Unitown.

Achievement Above All student group of the year, the Patriot Pride Marching Band. The band, under the direction of Mr. Bill Meldrum, have become our musical ambassadors and continue to excel in their competitions and performances.

Achievement Above All student of the year, Ruby Hernandez. Ruby is a senior in the top 5% of her class. She also participates in Unified Special Olympics, and is the president of the Unitown club.

Wrestling (Cumpton; 1/17)

The wrestling team would like to thank everyone that came out to our senior night on Wednesday.  For those of you that missed it, all three seniors with matches went undefeated in front of the home crowd.  Victor Bruno now has 12 more victories than all of last year and placed at the Titan tournament, Roman Ortega extended his seasons record to 20-p with 2 impressive pins, and Jasiel Tapia is now 29-0 against 195lb wrestlers after his impressive pin of the third ranked wrestler at that weight.  Jasiel has also won both tournaments he’s participated in this year, and looks to add to his gold medal hardware at the Brad Jones tournament at Centennial High School on the 24th and 25th.  Wish all of our wrestlers luck as they prepare for sectionals and state!

Students if you took the PSAT in October, the results are in. Please visit the Career Center for your results before school, after school or during your lunch hour.
