Meet Dr. Gary M. Buer

Dr. Gary M. Buer  became an instructor of physical education at Independence High School in 2005.  Dr. Buer came to Glendale after serving five years at Southern Virginia University where he started the football program for the Knights.  Prior to that he was the head football coach at Sabino High School in Tucson.

Dr. Buer graduated from the University of Minnesota, Morris where he played defensive end for the “Cougars.”  Following graduation he taught history, physical education, and coached basketball at Chokio-Alberta High School in western Minnesota.  During that same time period he also coached football at the University of Minnesota, Morris.  In January of 1970, he enlisted in the United States Army and served with the 20th Engineer Brigade in the Republic of South Vietnam.  Honorably discharged, he worked as defensive coordinator at St. Cloud Minnesota State University where he earned his Master’s Degree in Physical Education.  Upon completion of his Master’s Degree and accepting a graduate assistantship, he became the head junior varsity football coach at Brigham Young University while earning his doctorate in physical education and athletic administration.

Dr. Buer was the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Dakota State University where he complied an 18-2 record in his two years there.  At the invitation of now Kansas State University President, Dr. Jon Wefald, Buer accepted the challenge of building a football program at Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) in Marshall, Minnesota, where he inherited a team that was 4-40 the previous four years and had never known a winning season in intercollegiate football during its entire history.  Buer was named the Northern Intercollegiate Conference (NIC) coach of the year in 1987 and 1990 and the NAIA District 13 Coach of the year in 1985, 1987, and 1990.  The Golden Mustangs participated in the national playoffs in 1987 and 1990.  To this date, Buer holds the distinction of being the only coach to guide Southwest Minnesota State University to winning football seasons.  Following 14 years as head football coach, including four as Director of Men’s Athletics at SMSU, Buer joined Coach Jim Wacker and the University of Minnesota football staff where he served four years working in quality control.  He then was named Director of Activities and Head Football Coach at Marshall High School located in Marshall, Minnesota where he served for six years before moving to Sabino High School in Tucson.  In 2009, the Patriot Football Team won the Western Sky Region Championship.  Coach Buer was voted the 2009 Region “Coach of The Year” by his coaching peers.
