Independence High School’s (IHS) journalism staff, the Patriot Glory, received a recognition award for “exceptional fundraising efforts,” from Make-A-Wish® Arizona, presented by Torrie Yerkovich, External Event Coordinator on February 18, 2015.

Last semester, the Patriot Glory organized a campus Believe Campaign at IHS. Independence was able to contribute 21,302 Santa letters as a school. Yerkovich said, “[IHS] has written more Macy’s Believe Campaign letters than any other school that we work with!”

Through the Macy’s Believe Campaign, for every letter given $1.00 is donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation®, an organization that grants wishes to children with “life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.” Independence turned Santa letters in on National Believe Day, when each letter is worth $2.00, which equates to over $40,000.

Students, staff members, and teachers across campus all participated in writing thousands of letters. Amber Hinson, Editor-in-Chief of the Patriot Glory, said, “It was an amazing feeling to get recognized for our efforts in doing something good for others.”
