A New Year, The Patriot Way

Independence High School is back in session, and there is something special about seeing our campus come to life again. Classrooms are full, familiar faces are returning, new Patriots are finding their way, and another year of learning is officially underway.

As we begin the 2026–2027 school year, we have plenty to be proud of from the year behind us. Our students demonstrated growth in the classroom, found success on state, district and AP assessments, and showed a strong commitment to the many activities and opportunities available outside of class.

Those accomplishments matter, but what excites us most is what comes next.

Across campus, our teachers are already thinking about how to build on that progress. In Science, that means helping students go beyond simply knowing the content. “We want students to move beyond just knowing science content and become better at analyzing evidence, thinking critically, and applying what they know,” the Science Department shared.

That same focus on preparing students for what comes next takes many different forms at IHS. Our English teachers are looking forward to fostering a love of literature, celebrating students’ growth as writers, and strengthening the communication, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills they will carry with them after graduation.

For our English Learner Department, preparation also means making sure students feel supported as they take their next academic steps. After celebrating the success of many students on the AZELLA last year, the department is now looking ahead to its newest Patriots while continuing to support students transitioning into mainstream classes.

Learning at IHS also extends far beyond assessments. Our World Language teachers hope students will discover new cultures and perspectives while finding more ways to connect through programs such as La Familia/Culture Club and French Club.

“As IHS World Language teachers, we are all native speakers of our respective languages, and therefore, the best ambassadors of our cultures,” the World Language Department shared.

That sense of connection is something we hope to see grow throughout IHS this year. Whether it is through a class that challenges them, a club where they find their people, a sport they love, or an experience they never expected to try, we want every Patriot to find a reason to participate in our school community.

It all comes back to The Patriot Way.

We ask our students to participate in their learning, develop a sense of purpose, take responsibility for their community and commit to their personal achievement each day. Just as importantly, we want every student to know that our teachers and staff are here to support them along the way.

Last year gave us plenty to celebrate. This year gives us another opportunity to grow.
