GLENDALE UNION WINS STATE AND STATE RUNNER-UP

IN UNIFIED BADMINTON

Congratulations to our Special Olympics Unified Teams from Independence and Glendale. Independence won the state championship with Oscar Arredondo Torres and Enrique Arrellano; and Glendale was the state runner-up with Rogelio Miranda Real and Vanessa Sanchez.

Special Olympics Unified now competes as part of AIA sports. The first event of the year was badminton, when competition began with sectionals on Oct. 2 with over 40 teams. Two GUHSD teams, Independence and Glendale, qualified for state along with six other schools. On Saturday, Nov. 20, teams from across the state competed in the AIA Badminton Unified State Championships. Both Independence and Glendale showed great teamwork and outstanding sportsmanship.

Congratulations to both schools, their coaches, and especially their student athletes. The teams are coached by Jennifer Perry and Samantha Wyatt at Independence, and Megan O’Donnell at Glendale.
