Laura Mason, 1963-2012
Independence
students and staff welcomed back Principal Ambrose at an assembly on March 30, 2012. He had been away to care
for his wife, Laura Mason. Ms. Mason was the media center director at
Moon Valley High School. She fought with character and strength,
but lost her battle to leukemia last month. Independence wanted to pay
tribute to Mr. Ambrose's amazing wife and did so in a several ways.
- Key Club
presented Mr. Ambrose with a check for $600 to the American Cancer
Society from their "Change for Laura" campaign.
- Student Council created a painting for him as a reminder that he's part
of this community.
- Laura's Library was built to tempt readers. Laura's
Library is a free book exchange for the entire campus. Gene Boeckel,
parking lot attendant at Sunnyslope, built the
rock and the Independence maintenance crew built the interior box. Ms.
Mason's appreciation of reading lives on in this campus library.

"Laura's Library
This book exchange is in honor of Laura Mason. She was a well loved
media center director at Moon Valley High School. She impacted students
there on a daily basis as she shared of love of reading with them. Her
impact here was strong as well. Mr. Rob Ambrose, principal of
Independence, was married to Laura. Mr. Ambrose is someone who values
books as well. This rock stands as a tribute to Laura who fought her
battle with leukemia with character and strength. Although she passed
in March of 2012, her legacy will remain a part of this school and this
school district. When you take a book or donate a book, you're
remembering Laura. She would want you to find joy, humor, suspense,
excitement and comfort in books just as she did. When you read these
books, read for Laura.
